Angelina is linked to many humanitarian causes and she is best known for some of her work in Cambodia, so I wanted to create a typeface to reflect this.
I chose a Thai typeface because it was the nearest I could get to Cambodian. I really wanted to change the actual language to Khmer which is the Cambodian language but I had problems doing so.
For the background I chose a light green because I feel it is a Cambodian colour and I centred the body of text to the right as I wanted the design to feel simple.

Gordon Brown reading Hamlet
I wanted to display Gordon Brown in an editorial way as he is often in the papers and on the news and I think he would chose this media to read Hamlet.
The article is about Gordon Browns analysis on how he understands the soliloquy of Hamlet and how important it is for the next generation to understand the writings of Shakespeare.
I researched newspapers and magazine layouts. I wanted a catchy heading like the newspapers use so I took a interesting line from Hamlet and put it as the main heading.

Peaches Geldoff reading Hamlet
Peaches - The Teen Voice- A modern code where peaches only communicates to teenagers using the Hamlet solioquay. The pink bold barcode revealed highlights sentences to shock and stop teenagers from suicide. “The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks”.
For peaches I researched a lot of interviews and articles written about her. One that I concentrated on the most was articles written about a show called “ In the mind of a teen”. This series was about her going across the country interviewing teens from all different backgrounds. This gave me the idea to communicate this piece graphically at the angle of a teenage voice.
Peaches has also hosted and presented many fashion shows so I want this design to be fun and colorful to reflect her youth.
As she represents a teen voice I decided that if she were to read Hamlet then her only audience would be to teens and to do this I came to the conclusion of creating some kind of code. So that adults couldn’t read what she was saying only teens and this would make it more interesting to teens.
My next thoughts were why would she do this? So I came to the decision that it would be to put teens off teenage suicide and to make the aware of the sheer implications involved if they were to commit suicide.
I put the soliloquy to the left side of the page and made the font larger on sentences that were contemplating suicide. This was so that when it is decoded by teenagers peaches message would read one of a shock tactic this is what will happen to you. “and by opposing, end them. To die, to sleep;”

Amy Winehouse reading Hamlet
My first thoughts when tackling Amy Winehouse were to break the type up or use a or a script typeface. I experimented and both designs didn’t work.
After researching even more I came to the conclusion that the main thing about Amy is her two sided personality. I watched interviews and music videos on youtube and this helped me a lot with the final design.
As she had an 2 sided personality which has been brought on by her addictions I decided to make my design with two sides. One to reflect her dark side the other to reflect her normal side.
The black side reflects her darker more destructive side and by communicating this I have made the background black and the typeface Arno pro light italic display. Using an italic type I think reflects more emotion.
The opposite side is meant to reflect her normal side so it is clean white and I chose the very common Times New Roman because of this.
Why have I put some sentences on the black and some on the white? Well it is because each sentence reflects the state of her two sided personality. On the black side the sentences are those that a dramatic description of committing suicide. The other side of sentences are those that are her normal conscience of contemplating suicide “Thus conscience does make cowards of us all,”. The reasoning mind and not the extreme depressing thoughts that she has on the other side.

Modern Hamlet
For my modern I wanted to make certain powerful sentences that don’t often get used, be used in my design because of their deepness. I also wanted to mess the sequence of the solioquay.
I chose “The slings of arrows of outrageous fortune” as a big heading because it is one of the emotional sentences that carries a lot of weight in the soliloquy. Along with “The heart ache and the thousand natural shocks”. The first two sentences are describing his position (the princes) as being unfortunate and asking why am I here and the second sentences assuming what it would be like to die. I also put “to die to sleep” in a medium size font and put it next to the other two sentences. I wanted to highlight these sentences altogether because they are powerful and convey a more emotional take on the soliloquy. The obvious “to be or not to be” to be is in small font as I didn’t want to draw attention to it.
The emotion that I am trying to create graphically is the emotional of his suicidal thoughts rather than the sentences that indicate him wrestling with his sane mind, I wanted to show his insane mind. I have also highlighted suffer in another sentence as well to communicate this.
I highlighted in white “For who would bear the whips and scorns of time, th’ oppressor’s wrong, the proud man’s contumely” because of the content. It is stating who would want to live like this and be tormented by time.
In the body of text just below the main heading I have pulled one of the sentences out of the paragraph because I feel it sums up the other sentences and draws to an conclusion. “Thus conscience does make cowards of us all,” this is the sentence towards the end of the soliloquy that states which way his mind is going to go and I think for that reason it is a very important sentence.
I used the typeface Abadi MT Condensed Extra Bold because I think it worked the best for the headings and gave a clear and concise reading. I also felt that it was quite stern and authorative typeface. I used modern 20 for the body of type because it is easier to read in paragraph.

Classical
For my classical design I wanted to something simple. I experimented with the font size of the heading and the bar line underneath it. I wanted the soliloquy to be centred on the page and I also wanted to create space so I constructed my classic on A3 and made the paragraph font size 12. By having the paragraph centred and the font 12 this created the space I wanted.
The font that I chose was apple lisung because I think that it added a modern feel to the classic layout. I did find to my surprise the classical harder to design because of the restrictions.
The outer lines of the paragraph are quite shapely as some of the lines are short and some long and it does look like an hour glass figure and I like this effect.

Booklet
For my booklet I couldn’t decide what topic to use to construct the 16 page booklet on. I researched into the art movement Vorticism and the magazine they created Blast.
I was torn between two topics either using Russian poster design or China as a developing country for the books content.
I chose Russian poster design as I thought that I could make some nice photomontage in monochrome, but I wish now I had gone with China as I could have experimented with Chinese typography. I am not happy with the outcome of the 16 page booklet.
I looked at Russian constructivism for ideas and inspiration for layout and at Vorticism. The Vorticism style was more bold lines and harsh colours and rebellion of the typical Victorian style.
First of all I collected all my images that I was going to use and then I decided on the layout and placement of everything. Certain images restricted my layout so I worked with them.
I added shapes to some pages that needed it because of the geometric style of El Lissitizy. I wanted some of the type to reflect the word Blast so in page 2 & 3 I had letters being Blasted out of a image that I had of a girl with a speaker phone. On other pages I had letters scattered across the page and others I had words. I also experimented partcular words having different size fonts. The headings I slanted at an angle on the page to reflect the positioning that Russian constructivism used.
I chose Futura for the body of text and for the headings Blair MdITC TT because I felt that they both reflected a Russian style.
My front page was not well executed and I feel it let the book down, as it was poorly edited in Photoshop and the image looked pixilated.
After going through the booklet with a tutor he suggested that I made some changes. The changes were the front and back cover and the headings inside the booklet. The headings I had produced were quite boring so I redesigned them changing the leading and the font size for the last word. This made the headings more attractive to the reader and made the layout easy to read.
I changed the front and back cover by using a circle for the front and back. On the front cover I put a circle on the left hand side of the corner page with type in a line next to it. I think it would have looked more intriguing and simple had I just left a circle on both sides.

Magazine Re-design
Magazine Re-design
On the magazine spread that I chose there were big images on both pages with small body of text on the right hand page. On the left hand side of the page an image dominates all of the page. Looking at the magazine’s body of text it is a more condensed typeface and quite light. The body of text is also not of a roman typeface family as it has no decorative serifs.
Before deciding how to redesign this magazine layout I read the content of the article to get ideas as to how to re-design.
The article was about two architects who were partners building there own holiday home with a limited budget in the Swiss Alps. There main aim of the build was to have a building with beautiful and dramatic scenery of the Alps.
The existing layout was simple with overpowering images so I wanted it to make the images smaller and to put the emphasis more on the articles content regarding scenery of the Swiss alps. I chose Delicate because I thought that it would best reflect the scenery and the content of the article. I wanted the couple them hovering over the scenery because they constructed this house for the views. I experimented using filters in Photoshop and cutting them from out of the background they were in, but all this didn't work. I then resized the picture smaller and put them in them on the corner of the left hand side of the page to look as if they were floating. I decided to crop a picture I had of the Himalaya Mountains and use this at the bottom of the spread across two pages. I also experimented in Photoshop to get a light delicate affect for the mountains. I wanted something that wouldn’t be overpowering.
For typography I wanted a script typography to represent a French script because French is one of the main spoken languages in Switzerland. I wanted some of the headings to be laid vertically so it would bring the viewers eye down to the mountains. The typeface that I used was Blair Mdtl for the headings and Garamond for the body of text. I experimented and put some of the heading in red to give it a Sweedish feel but this didn’t look right and it did not reflect the word delicate, so I left it all in black.
I am fairly happy with the overall outcome of the design and because the design is very different to the orginal.
