Magazine Re-design

Magazine Re-design
On the magazine spread that I chose there were big images on both pages with small body of text on the right hand page. On the left hand side of the page an image dominates all of the page. Looking at the magazine’s body of text it is a more condensed typeface and quite light. The body of text is also not of a roman typeface family as it has no decorative serifs.
Before deciding how to redesign this magazine layout I read the content of the article to get ideas as to how to re-design.
The article was about two architects who were partners building there own holiday home with a limited budget in the Swiss Alps. There main aim of the build was to have a building with beautiful and dramatic scenery of the Alps.
The existing layout was simple with overpowering images so I wanted it to make the images smaller and to put the emphasis more on the articles content regarding scenery of the Swiss alps. I chose Delicate because I thought that it would best reflect the scenery and the content of the article. I wanted the couple them hovering over the scenery because they constructed this house for the views. I experimented using filters in Photoshop and cutting them from out of the background they were in, but all this didn't work. I then resized the picture smaller and put them in them on the corner of the left hand side of the page to look as if they were floating. I decided to crop a picture I had of the Himalaya Mountains and use this at the bottom of the spread across two pages. I also experimented in Photoshop to get a light delicate affect for the mountains. I wanted something that wouldn’t be overpowering.
For typography I wanted a script typography to represent a French script because French is one of the main spoken languages in Switzerland. I wanted some of the headings to be laid vertically so it would bring the viewers eye down to the mountains. The typeface that I used was Blair Mdtl for the headings and Garamond for the body of text. I experimented and put some of the heading in red to give it a Sweedish feel but this didn’t look right and it did not reflect the word delicate, so I left it all in black.
I am fairly happy with the overall outcome of the design and because the design is very different to the orginal.
